How will I know if my Background Check has been approved? You should receive a confirmation email from Craven County Schools once your Volunteer Application has been approved, or you will receive a message if there is a problem with your application. If you are still not sure, you may contact the front office or you can email the HUG Coordinator to see if your name is on the list ([email protected]).
What is "HUG"? HUG stands for "Help Us Grow" and it utilizes volunteers to enrich and expand the regular curriculum. The HUG Coordinator will work with the teachers and staff to place volunteers where they are needed most (for example, helping in the STEM Lab or Media Center). The HUG Coordinator can be reached at [email protected].
What is "AIG"? AIG is the Academically/Intellectually Gifted Program here at WJG. It is "a part of Craven County Schools which strives to meet the academic and social/emotional needs of gifted students." For this program, your child will be pulled out of regular class for enrichment. The schedule will depend on the child. More information about AIG can be found here.
How does pick up and drop off (carpool) work? In the morning, student drop off begins at 7:30 AM, and takes place in the area in front of the school. Just pull around the parking lot to the front of the school and either a student or staff member will help your child out of the vehicle. In the afternoon, student pick-up begins at 3:05 PM, and take place in the area in front of the school. Simply wait in the line of cars and it will start moving at 3:05. As you approach the school, a staff member will ask your child's name and tell you at which cone your child will be waiting. A staff member will help your child into your vehicle.
We are a military family. Are there extra resources for us? Yes! Cherry Point has a School Liaison Officer and she can help you in so many ways. According totheir website,"The school liaison is available to help with ALL K-12 education issues for public, private, DoDEA and home-schooled students. Contact the School Liaison to discuss assistance with finding schools in the area, transitions, deployments, moving tips and school advice. You can also get resources for tutoring, scholarships and SAT/ACT prep." "Like" their Facebookpage to stay up to date! https://www.facebook.com/CherryPointSchoolLiaison/ Another way military students receive support is through the "Club USA" program. Upon parent approval, students from military families are pulled into a special group during lunch for extra support through projects and fun!
Can I visit my child for lunch? Yes! Just find out your child's lunch schedule (either from his teacher or the front office) and come to school a few minutes before that time to check in on the computer in the main office. Then just head to the cafeteria to enjoy lunch with your child. Some teachers prefer that you have lunch at a separate table with your student, and some don't mind if you sit with the class. You are allowed to bring lunch from outside if you like. Make sure you check back out on the office computer before you leave.
What is School Store? One Friday every month (from 7:30 - 8:00) PTO Volunteers will be stationed at the end of the main hallway to run the School Store! The "store" sells fun, novelty school supplies and other small items for $.50-$1.00 each with all profits going to the PTO (which will later be distributed to the teachers or to fund school needs to be determined by the administration and PTO). The kids LOVE school store and are always excited to see what's new. If your child would like to shop, please send money in a small ziplock bag. Thank you for your support!
Gurganus is a Title 1 School. What does that mean? The goal of Title 1 is to provide extra instructional services and activities which support students identified as failing or most at-risk of failing the state's challenging performance standards in math, reading, and writing. The program aims to improve the skills of educationally disadvantaged students at our school. That means that WJG receives extra funding to help its students succeed through programs such as Math Night, Science Night and Family Reading Night. WJG has a dedicated Title 1 Intervention Specialist, Amy Haskins. Pleasecontact her with any questions!
